Excellent coaches work to evoke excellence in others. They enable people to inspire themselves to do fulfilling work, to reach more of their potential, and to make a difference. Coaches need to be intentional in their interactions with teams and individuals in order to be effective change agents.
This workshop is an opportunity to continuously improve your coaching skills through experiential exercises, both learning new skills and refreshing your knowledge. Participants will coach each other on real-world situations, receiving and giving actionable feedback throughout the workshop. Through this experience, you will gain knowledge and skills that you can apply immediately.
Participants in this workshop will be able to:
- Apply an agile coaching framework to help you facilitate learning and intentional action.
- Practice using over 12 essential coaching skills.
- Describe the similarities and differences between coaching individuals and coaching teams.
- Explore coaching within the context of organizational culture.
- Discover techniques to spark meaningful dialogue within your teams.
- Recognize common coaching mistakes and how to avoid them.
The Coaching Skills Workshop is for anyone who is a member of or who supports an agile team. Participants will get the most out of this if they are experienced agile practitioners who already understand the agile mindset.
This workshop is NOT about teaching agile frameworks or practices. This course is NOT about teaching the many stances and skills that may be required of an Agile Coach or Scrum Master.
The focus of this workshop is on coaching skills, which are essential Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches and can be valuable for many other roles. The agile coaching framework and coaching skills you learn in this workshop can be applied in any agile work environment.
During our time together, we will explore the following topics. We will cover the basics of professional coaching within the context of an agile workplace. Throughout the workshop, you will practice using elements of the agile coaching framework and coaching skills.
Coaching Foundations - Establish a solid foundation of what coaching is and what coaching is not. Provide a basic understanding of the theory behind the agile coaching framework, including servant leadership and the Co-Active Coaching Model. Introduce coaching principles and the context of agile culture.
Coaching Individuals - To coach people, we must understand people. Explore skills related to emotional intelligence using the Five Factor Model. Practice using elements of the agile coaching framework and essential coaching skills, including active listening, powerful questions, perspective, emotion, challenge, and many more.
Coaching Teams - A team is more than simply a collection of individuals. A team becomes a new entity, a living and breathing and constantly changing being. Discover characteristics of high performing teams. Practice applying the agile coaching framework and essential coaching skills to the team context. Experience using a set of team coaching tools to establish team identity and learn techniques to spark impactful dialogue.
Coaching in the Context of Organizational Culture - Explore culture models and assess your organization. Practice applying the agile coaching framework and coaching skills in the organizational context.
Conclusions and Next Steps - Taking care of yourself, so you can best serve others. Practical steps for taking your learning beyond the classroom.

Stephanie is a gifted instructor and coach. This was an exceptionally balanced two days of learning, interaction, and activity. I especially valued the pattern of ‘new learning, then group activity, then one-on-one role play’ repeated throughout the two days.
All the class materials that Stephanie provided were high quality and aided my learning and application of the concepts. I did not experience "training fatigue" until the last bit of the 2nd day. Then I knew it was time to return home, reflect on all that I experienced during the two days, and begin using my new coaching practices for Agile.
