Most consultants will hand you “best practices” and the “right tools.” I don’t buy that.
In complex, rapidly changing environments, there is no one-size-fits-all playbook. The real work is learning how to think critically, experiment intentionally, and make smart adaptations as you go.
I know this because I started my career doing the opposite — climbing the corporate ladder as a technology project and program manager, drowning in endless plans, reports, and status updates. On paper, I was successful. In reality, I was exhausted from managing chaos instead of creating impact.
The turning point came when I discovered agile ways of working—short cycles, real collaboration, continuous learning.
My whole body said yes. That leap didn’t just change my career, it transformed how I lead and how I help others lead.
Soon after, I booked a trip from Ohio to Costa Rica for 10 weeks and immersed myself in learning how to surf. It forced me to stop trying to muscle my way through uncertainty and start paying attention to reality. Surfing taught me to read conditions, make quick decisions, fall often, get back up, and stay present instead of trying to control everything. In other words, the exact skills leadership actually requires.
Today, whether I’m coaching a leadership team, facilitating team workshops, or catching waves in Costa Rica, my philosophy is the same: stop chasing certainty, start seeking clarity, and lead like it matters.
